Evangelical:

Evangelical is a term on the verge of losing its meaning, so we want to say what we mean by the term. To us, it doesn't mean "cranky fundamentalist." The root of the word in Greek means "one who brings good news."

We believe in personal conversion and salvation by faith in the atoning death of Jesus Christ. That is, that whether in a moment, or through a process, each of us must recognize Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior. He paid the price for each of us before we were even born. It is by faith that we are saved.

That sounds very theological, and it is. It means basically that in Jesus, God gave Himself to rescue us from ourselves and all the hurt we've caused, and the hurt done to us. The rescue is without cost to us, although it cost Jesus His life. Our job is simply to accept the free gift. Anyway we look at this, it is good news for us.

The astonishing thing is that the Bible says that it is not by working hard, or doing good works, that we are able to win God's love. He loved us even while we were still sinners:

Ephesians 2:4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions-- it is by grace you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-- and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.

As evangelicals, we also uphold the inspiration and authority of the Bible as God's intentional revelation of Himself to us. The Bible is where we learn about the good news, and learn about the heart and character of God, which is pretty amazing. We realize that we cannot know God without His revealing Himself to us. We are not, after all, competent to understand One greater than ourselves without His intentional help. God says:

Isaiah 55:9 As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. 10 As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, 11 so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

And referring to Scripture, Paul says:

2nd Timothy 3:15 From childhood you have known the sacred writings that are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is inspired by God (literally "God-breathed") and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work.

Some public leaders of the church, including some leaders of the Episcopal Church, have declared in recent years that they no longer believe what the Bible says. How depressing! Well, we do believe what the Bible says. We believe God is intentional in His self-revelation to us in Scripture, and we need to be intentional in our study of it and our confidence in it. And where Scripture contradicts modern values, we judge modern values in light of Scripture.

God is not angry with us. He does not require us to work hard for Him to love us. He loves us even before we love Him. He loves us before we even comprehend it. He loves us even before we know how to respond.

We have a Lord who loves us as a bridegroom loves his bride, and who gives everything He has and is for her.  If we've said "yes" to the bridegroom, it is done. We're His and He is ours.

Then the love feast and the joy of giving to each other begins - not as obligation or oppression or forced labor, but simply out of great joy!
