Gently charismatic:
We don't believe that some of the gifts of the Holy Spirit (Greek:
"charismata") stopped at an arbitrary point in history, but rather
that they all continue to operate in the Body of Christ, and are distributed
throughout the Body of Christ. This should be a source of peace, not division or
disorder. In First Corinthians 12, Paul has this counsel:
1 Now about spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be
ignorant. 2 You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were
influenced and led astray to mute idols. 3 Therefore I tell you that no one who
is speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one
can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit. 4 There are
different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are different kinds of
service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but the same
God works all of them in all people. 7 Now to each one the manifestation of the
Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit
the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same
Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by
that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to
another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds
of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are
the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he
determines. 12 The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and
though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ.
We recognize the Holy Spirit as a person, as sovereign God, and like the wind,
He blows where He chooses. We cannot manipulate the Holy Spirit, but we can and
do invite His presence among us. How He chooses to move is according to God's
will, not ours, although we can be open to His presence and invite it.
This means that we acknowledge the reality of all of the gifts of the Spirit,
but also realize that they are distributed among the members of the Body of
Christ. No one has all of them. No one has none. No specific gift
(whether hospitality or tongues or wisdom) is required as evidence of anyone's
salvation, but the Holy Spirit does bestow gifts on each believer for the
building up of the whole church. In practical terms, this means that everyone is
welcome, regardless of which gifts the Holy Spirit has or will bestow upon them,
and there is no superiority that comes from the presence of any gift (after all,
they are gifts!). The one with a gift of hospitality is as welcome and
important as the one with a gift of wisdom, or mercy, or anything else.
One Web site you might be interested in visiting for a more thorough study of
the gifts of the Holy Spirit is The Holy
Spirit and You. This is an independent site put up by Robert Longman Jr.,
and has proved to be very solid and helpful.
